Για να φτάσουμε στο Θέρισο από τα Χανιά, ακολουθούμε τον δρόμο προς τον κόμβο του Κλαδισού μέσω της οδού και τις πινακίδες για. Η διαδρομή μέσα από το θερισιανό φαράγγι -μήκους 6 χλμ.- αποζημιώνει πρόωρα τον επισκέπτη για την επιλογή του.
Μετά από περίπου 20΄ θα αντικρίσετε το ιστορικό χωριό, από το οποίο ξεκίνησε το 1905 η επανάσταση του Θερίσου, όπως είναι γνωστή στην ιστοριογραφία η κινητοποίηση που ξεκίνησε από εκεί το 1905 και εξαπλώθηκε σε όλο το νησί, διεκδικώντας επίσημα την ένωση της Κρήτης με την Ελλάδα. Στην κεντρική πλατεία του χωριού δεσπόζει ο ανδριάντας του μεγάλου Έλληνα πολιτικού Ελευθέριου Βενιζέλου.
Επίσης, στο χωριό μπορείτε να επισκεφθείτε δύο εξαιρετικά μουσεία, το Ιστορικό και Λαογραφικό Μουσείο, με έτος ιδρύσεως το 1985, που στεγάζεται στο κτήριο που χρησίμευε ως στρατηγείο για τον Ελευθέριο Βενιζέλο, καθώς και το μουσείο Εθνικής Αντίστασης, στο οποίο εκτίθενται κειμήλια και πλούσιο φωτογραφικό υλικό από την ταραγμένη εκείνη περίοδο.
Το Θέρισο, ωστόσο, είναι γνωστό στους απανταχού καλοφαγάδες. Εξαιρετικές οικογενειακές ταβέρνες, που φημίζονται για τα κρεατικά, έχουν αναγάγει την περιοχή σε δημοφιλή γαστρονομικό προορισμό ντόπιων και επισκεπτών. Παραδοσιακό απάκι, σύγκλινο και καπνιστά λουκάνικα, αρνάκι τσιγαριαστό, στάκα, φρικασέ με σταμναγκάθι και μαραθόπιτα, σε συνδυασμό με ντόπιο κρασί και τσικουδιά αποτελούν το πιο αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα γευστικής παράδοσης και κουλτούρας.
Περιβόλια
Από την πόλη των Χανίων και ξεκινώντας τη διαδρομή για το ιστορικό χωριό του Θερίσου, πρώτη στάση είναι στο χωριό Περιβόλια, μία κωμόπολη στους βόρειους πρόποδες των Λευκών Ορέων. Αφού κάνετε μία παύση στην πλατεία Ηρώων, όπου τιμάται η μνήμη των 33 αμάχων Περιβολιανών που εκτελέστηκαν από τους Γερμανούς το 1941, συνεχίστε προς τα Μπουτσουναριά (ιστορικός αρχαιολογικός χώρος).
Μία ατμοσφαιρική διαδρομή στον χρόνο και στη φύση που θα σας αποζημιώσει με τη θέα του στην κορυφή, καθώς το βλέμμα χάνεται στον ορίζοντα.
Βαρύπετρο
Επόμενη στάση το χωριό Βαρύπετρο. Ένας τόπος με πυκνή βλάστηση που ενδείκνυται για πεζοπορία και περίπατο, καθώς διαθέτει φυσικά μονοπάτια. Άξια αναφοράς η Ι.Μ. Χρυσοπηγής στην περιοχή του Καστέλλου, ένα από τα γνωστότερα γυναικεία μοναστήρια που κρατάει από την τελευταία περίοδο της Βενετοκρατίας.
